There are several things our country does well. None of them are Child Care. Despite the efforts of President Bill Clinton in '96 we still manage to ignore the needs and wants of our children. As a parent or as a kid anyone can see what the foster care system is doing.
When I was younger my parents made a point to teach me and my siblings right from wrong by example. Of course some of my older siblings rebelled a little and thats normal to go through that stage in life. Watching nuclear and non-nuclear family members go through that phase demostrated individuality and independence which is important, especially for adolesents to learn. When children are put into a disfunctional home with tweleve kids packed in, what example does that send. The United States is supposed to stand for freedom and safety. How can we as a nation stand for so valuable and neglect the youth that is our future? Do we really undermine and undervalue kid and teenagers so much we can't ask them for their opinion or listen to their advice, experiences, or needs?
The policies for child care make it harder for biological families to be reunited. Granted some parents aren't fit for the job but what about those who are? What do the children want? Most social workers and child care workers do not ask the child "What kind of family are you comfortable with?" or "Would you like to be reunited with your family?" All in all the people who know what is best for a person, is that person themself.
